The Mediterranean Sea is the largest mass grave in Europe. Over 30.000 people have perished while attempting to cross the sea. Hukkuneet (The Drowned), a book by journalist Taina Tervonen and photographer Anna Autio, tells the story of those lost while crossing the sea and shows what was left behind – personal objects, graves and shipwrecks. The cover of the book extends for 20 pages. It features a List of Deaths of people on their way to Europe, collected from small news articles in the international media. Each listing has a date, number of deaths, name(s) if known, cause of death and place. The cover design of Hukkuneet won a gold award in the European Design Awards. The book design was granted an Award of Excellence in the Communication Arts Design Competition (US) as well as a gold award in Vuoden Huiput (FI). Hukkuneet was shortlisted in the ADC Europe Awards as well as selected in the collection of The Most Beautiful Books of the Year in Finland. Lantun henki is a book by photographer Touko Hujanen and writer-philosopher Antti Salminen. They have been documenting for years the materially nearly independent lives of Lasse Nordlund and his family in Valtimo, eastern Finland. Besides the photographic work, the book features fragmented texts based on interviews with Lasse Nordlund.&nbsp; The ornaments on the cover and the book title are early 20th century metal and wood types, printed in letter-press and scanned. The types belong to the collection of graphic designer Ilkka Kärkkäinen, with whom the printing was done in collaboration. Together we also designed and hand-printed the graphics for Touko Hujanen’s exhibition. The cover design was chosen to be part of the Notable Book Covers collection of the&nbsp;Most Beautiful Books in Finland and finalist at the&nbsp;European Design Awards. The edition of 400 copies was distributed for free in the Kurvi area in December 2025.The design was granted a silver award at Vuoden Huiput – Best of Finnish Advertising and Design. Machiavelli has been a controversial figure ever since his writings were published at the close of the Renaissance.&nbsp;This is due to the frank and forthright nature of the guidance to prospective rulers he shares in The Prince. Not much is sacred for Machiavelli, and he does not shrink from advising about things like manipulation of public opinion, deception of the gullible, or the use of violence for political purposes.The book comes with a hard cover in luxurious dark grey Van Heek Coloretta cloth and embroidered details. The cover design was inspired by representations of power in modern day menswear.The cover design was granted a bronze award at the European Design Awards. Its guiding themes – landscape, northern nature and cultural crossroads – remind us that we exist in a state of perpetual change. This publication introduces works from the Wihuri Foundation Collection selected by Kiasma’s curators and opens views to the history of northern Finnish art.
